Use of Methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE)

Gasoline Additive

MTBE is primarily used as an oxygenate additive in gasoline to increase its octane rating and improve combustion efficiency. It enhances engine performance by facilitating more complete fuel combustion, thereby reducing emissions of harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

Methylating Agent

MTBE is employed as a methylating agent in organic synthesis reactions to introduce methyl groups into organic molecules. It is particularly useful in reactions involving sensitive substrates or those requiring mild reaction conditions.

Extraction and Purification

MTBE is utilized in extraction processes to separate and purify organic compounds from complex mixtures. It is commonly used in liquid-liquid extraction techniques to isolate desired compounds from reaction mixtures or natural products.

Safety Conside-rations

Flammability

MTBE is highly flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air. It has a low flash point and can ignite easily when exposed to heat, sparks, or open flames. Therefore, appropriate precautions should be taken to prevent fire hazards, including the use of spark-proof equipment and proper storage away from ignition sources.

Skin Contact

Contact with MTBE liquid or vapor may cause irritation or chemical burns to the skin. Prolonged or repeated skin contact should be avoided, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and protective clothing, should be worn to prevent skin exposure.

Eye Contact

MTBE can cause irritation or damage to the eyes upon contact. In case of eye exposure, immediate flushing with water for at least 15 minutes is recommended. Contact lenses should be removed if present and medical attention sought if irritation persists.
